How the calculator works

ROAS = attributed revenue ÷ advertising spend. Revenue after advertising spend = attributed revenue − advertising spend. That figure is not necessarily net profit, because it does not subtract cost of goods, operating expenses, refunds, taxes or other costs.

If you enter a gross margin percentage, estimated gross profit = attributed revenue × (margin ÷ 100). Estimated profit after ad spend = that gross profit − advertising spend. Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ (margin ÷ 100). For example, a 50% margin has a break-even ROAS of 2x: you would need two dollars of attributed revenue for each dollar spent on ads just to cover product cost and the ads themselves, before other expenses.

What each metric means

  • Advertising budget is optional. If you enter it, remaining budget is budget minus spend. A negative remaining amount means spend has already exceeded the budget you typed.
  • Advertising spend is what you actually spent in the period you are reviewing. It must be greater than zero or ROAS cannot be calculated.
  • Attributed revenue is the sales you are crediting to advertising. Attribution is often incomplete or shared across channels.
  • Gross margin is the percentage of revenue left after the direct cost of the product or service, if you choose to supply it.

Limitations

  • Attribution may be inaccurate. A sale can be influenced by several visits, emails or ads.
  • Results depend on the quality of the numbers you enter.
  • Taxes, operating expenses, refunds, shipping and other costs may not be included.
  • ROAS does not independently measure profitability.
  • The calculator does not send your figures to an account, payment system or mailing list.
